Video is manipulated to insert offense to Lula in speech in Pernambuco

False: It is false that a woman cursed former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) during a pre-campaign event on July 20 in Serra Talhada, Pernambuco. The excerpt from Dona Buruca’s testimony, as the rural worker is known, was manipulated to spread a lie. In fact, she thanks the former president and says that the people are asking her for help.

Investigated Content: Video in which a woman appears next to Lula, on the stage of an event, and says: “Lula, vai bebe no *”. The video is accompanied by the caption: “How cute! Look what she said to Lula”, and there is the insertion of an emoji laughing, the image of the current president Jair Bolsonaro smiling and the inscription of the interjection “putz” spelled with “s”.

where it was published: Shorts from YouTube, Twitter and TikTok.

Completion of Proof: The video in which a woman, identified as rural worker Dona Buruca, appears cursing Lula during a political event is false. The original content was manipulated with the insertion of a sentence not said by her. It is even possible to perceive differences between the voices of the rural worker and the one who pronounces the offensive sentence.

The conclusion that there was an edition to divulge a lie is also perceptible in the analysis of the original content, which can be seen in the live broadcast of the event, which took place on July 20, in Serra Talhada, Pernambuco (Power 360, Pernambuco Commerce Journal), and in posts in the accounts from Lula on Twitter and the federal deputy and national president of the PT, Gleisi Hoffmann, on Facebook.

Falsefor Comprova, is content invented or edited to change its original meaning and deliberately disclosed to spread a falsehood.

Scope of publication: As of September 6th, the YouTube shorts post had around 2 million views, 54,000 likes, and 5,100 comments. The sharing reached other networks, with a greater or lesser degree of visualization. On one TikTok profile alone, there were over 273,000 likes and 144,000 shares.

What the author of the publication says: There is no contact information on the page that released the fake video on YouTube, nor was the profile found on other social networks.

How do we check: Comprova made contact with Lula’s press office, who forwarded the original video and informed that it was recorded during an event in Serra Talhada, Pernambuco, on July 20th. Then, Comprova searched the internet and consulted reports on the coverage of the ceremony published by the press, which confirmed the information passed on by the team of the former president and current candidate for the presidency of the Republic.

Comprova inserted the link with the fake video on the platform InVID and found, in a reverse search on the internet, based on video frames, that the manipulated content was also posted on Twitter and TikTok.

Visits to cities in Pernambuco

Lula and Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), candidate for vice on the PT ticket, toured three cities in Pernambuco on the 20th and 21st of July. In Serra Talhada, they were on the 20th for a pre-campaign act at the city’s Old Railway Station. On the occasion, before the pronouncement of Lula and other authorities present at the event, a rural worker, known as Dona Buruca, gave her testimony.

The entirety of Dona Buruca’s speech, without manipulations, can be seen on channels that broadcast the event (Power 360, Pernambuco Commerce Journal). She did not curse the former president. The original video with the same angle and same moment as the manipulated content can be seen in this post by Gleisi Hoffmann, federal deputy and national president of the PT, and on Lula’s official account on twitter.

Which Dona Buruca says, in fact, is:

“Lula, you took the horse and donkey and left the man in the car and on the motorcycle (sic) and he can no longer ride. You can’t buy gasoline, Lula. Either sell or rust will eat. Lula, Pernambuco, Serra Talhada, are (sic) asking you for help. He’s asking you for help. Come back soon, we are waiting for you. And these people are all waiting for you, Lula”.

It is possible to verify, in the manipulated video, that the voice that utters the offense is different from that of Dona Buruca: another indication that the content was edited to spread a lie.

why do we investigate: Comprova investigates suspicious content that goes viral on the internet related to this year’s presidential elections, the covid-19 pandemic and public policies of the federal government. Fake videos like the one seen in this investigation are harmful to the electoral process, as they can influence voters’ votes based on a lie.

Other checks on the topic: In recent verifications involving the electoral process, Comprova showed that removal of rice producers from indigenous lands was not Lula’s determinationwhat Video deceives by denying secret budget and decontextualizing price hikes in Brazil is that It is false that Simone Tebet let a doctor be humiliated at the Covid CPI.

Disinformation pieces with manipulated audio and video are very frequent. Comprova has already demonstrated, for example, that the contents in which William Bonner appears calling Lula and Alckmin banditswhat Lula declares vote for Bolsonarowhat the former president was cursed in Caruaruor even that was humiliated by former governor of Paraíba.
