Leo XIV is the first pontiff born in the United States and was relatively unknown on the world scene before last week’s conclave.

He served for decades as a missionary in Peru before becoming Cardinal and taking a high position in the Vatican two years ago.

Request for the release of journalists

This Monday (12), Pope Leo XIV gathered to journalists of the world. The hearing began around 6am (Brasília time), 11am local time, in the Paulo VI room.

The Pontiff directed to professionals talking about those arrested for practicing the profession of journalist and said that the free press should be defended.

“The suffering of these arrested journalists concerns the awareness of the nations and the international community, calling everyone to keep the precious good of press freedom. Thank you dear friends for your service to the truth,” he said.

Leo XIV also asked for the end of a polarized “War War” made of party and ideological attacks, and that there is no room for fanaticism and hatred.
