According to the press office of the State Secretariat of Military Police, “the police located the person involved and, when they removed the animal from their hands, it fled”. After the rescue, the team took the turtle to the beach and returned it to the sea.
The action was recorded on video by a driver, which shows the man holding the turtle close to a police vehicle at Aterro do Flamengo. There is no information about the man’s whereabouts at this time.
Animal abuse is an environmental crime in Brazil, provided for in Law No. 9,605/1998. The law provides criminal and administrative sanctions for aggressors. Complaints can be communicated to the competent authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of animals and the population.
