Two mares were rescued by a group of eight volunteers last Sunday (19), in the city of Rio Grande, in the south of Rio Grande do Sul.
The animals were isolated in a region between Torotama Island and a fishing site, remaining isolated for more than two weeks. They ended up being about five kilometers away from the coast.
The location of the mares was possible with the help of a Brazilian Navy helicopter, which spotted the animals from the aircraft. Under rain and cold wind, volunteers set out in boats and jet skis for the rescue.
In a risky operation, the mares were tied to the boats and taken to dry land. See the video above.
The water level of Lagoa dos Patos made the work of volunteers difficult.
After the successful rescue, the group celebrated the action carried out with a lot of effort and dedication to save the lives of the isolated animals.
Lagoa dos Patos remains on alert
The level of Lagoa dos Patos gave a respite in the city of Rio Grande, but in places heavily affected by the flood, such as Pelotas, the situation is still one of alert and concern.
The reason is that the largest volume of water that comes out of Guaíba, in Greater Porto Alegre, flows into that region. As a result, the levels of Lagoa dos Patos are still rising.
Pelotas city hall asks that residents of risk areas not return to their homes yet due to the possibility of a new rise in water this Tuesday (21) and Wednesday (22).
There is also the expectation that the city of Pelotas will have, in the coming days, an increase in the level of the São Gonçalo Canal.
Animal rescues
As of early yesterday evening, more than 12,300 animals had been rescued amid the floods in the state.
In Canoas, in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, two cases gained repercussion. On May 9, the horse that became known as “Caramelo” was rescued from the top of a roof after being stranded for four days, according to witnesses, unable to move or feed.
Days later, a painting with the horse's image was auctioned for R$130,000. The amount was donated to entities that provide support for helping those affected by the floods and for the reconstruction of the state.
Another case that drew attention was that of a mare that was rescued from the 3rd floor of a residential building in the municipality of São Leopoldo. The rescue was carried out by the Fire Department, who blindfolded the animal before lifting it. A CNN the mare's owner reported that he placed the animal in the apartment with the intention of saving it from possible drowning.
