Video: more than 100 whales are stranded on a tourist beach in Australia

Marine wildlife experts rushed to the Australian state of Western Australia on Thursday (25) to rescue four pods of pilot whales stranded in a tourist estuary.

The whales were stranded in Toby Inlet, about 236 kilometers south of the state capital, Perth, according to the Western Australian Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.

“We understand that there are four groups of up to 160 pilot whales spread over approximately 500 meters. Unfortunately, 26 whales that stranded on the beach died,” a department spokesperson said in a statement.

In July last year, more than 50 pilot whales died after stranding themselves on a remote beach in Western Australia.

Pilot whales are famous for their close-knit social bonds, so when one gets into trouble and becomes stranded, the rest often follow, according to marine experts at the University of Western Australia.
