A meteor was seen crossing the sky of the Santa Maria region, in the center of Rio Grande do Sul, last Sunday (11), Mother’s Day.
According to Space Observatory Heller & Jung, the meteor was called “Phi Ophiuchids” and considered the “Mother’s Day meteor”.
The celestial body “entered the atmosphere at an altitude of 102.7 km and was extinguished over the region of Santa Maria at 55.2 km. He had a magnitude of -2 and a duration of 1.2 second,” said Observatory Director Carlos Fernando Jung.
According to Jung, the phenomenon is not uncommon, but it belongs to a rain of meteors discovered by the Brazilian Meteor Monitoring Network (Bramon) through research. The peak happened on Sunday.
Jung also explained that there are meteor records every day for 24 hours, but 99% of celestial bodies are low magnitude (shine and size). The “Mother’s Day meteor” was special for presenting magnitude greater than the average.
