A video that went viral on social media shows the moment when people on a boat begin dumping buckets of trash in the Boca cove, Florida, on Sunday (28).
Then, it is possible to see the patch of garbage on the surface of the water and some people on board celebrating.
See the moment garbage is dumped into the sea:
One of the comments online said: “I want to see the second part of the story where they go to jail and pay the fines.” Another said: “Throw them in prison for 20 years.”
Upon seeing the images, people at a nearby marina said: “They should be fined. They should be — I’m not trying to put anyone in prison — at least a few months in prison or something like that.”
Furthermore, Claire Paris, professor of Ocean Sciences at Rosenstiel School, pointed out that garbage creates a risk for marine animals that feed near the surface.
“From what I saw in the video, there are little pieces that can be mistaken for food, especially when there are a lot of waves, and the fish aren’t seeing much. [bem] what’s on the surface, just picking up things”, he warned.
State environmental authorities say they are aware of the incident and are investigating the matter.
