Amid the tragedy of the heavy rains that devastated Rio Grande do Sul, scenes of relief have occurred in the state. Thanks to the tireless work of volunteers, dogs that were lost during the floods are being reunited with their owners.
An improvised site by the Lutheran University of Brazil in Canoas brings together around 2,500 animals saved from heavy rains. Volunteers photograph the animals that arrive at the shelter and publish the images on an Instagram account. This way, owners who lost their pets during the floods have the chance to find them again. This was the case of Andréia, who had been looking for her dogs for a week. “I've been looking for them in shelters since last week, then I saw a photo of the furry Chewbacca
on the website, on Instagram, and I came looking for them here”, she says, excited.
The person responsible for the shelter says that the search for lost animals does not stop. “There is a lot of demand, there are many who find it, so it is very exciting, right? We cry together, right? Because they find it, they hug it, they cry, so it’s very emotional, it’s very rewarding,” she says.
For Andréia, the reunion was a huge relief. “I was very happy, because I was thinking they had died, you know? Drowned. But, thank God, they are fine”, she says.
