The pilot reported that the plane's landing gear failed shortly after taking off toward Port Macquarie, a coastal town 390km north of Sydney, early in the morning.

The plane circled the Newcastle area, burning fuel for almost four hours before managing to land safely.

“Two passengers on board, both from Tuggerawong. A 60-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman. After a few hours in the air, burning enough fuel, he made a manual landing which I was very happy to see,” Police Superintendent Wayne Humphrey told reporters.

Local press reported that the plane was a Beechcraft B200 Super King Air plane.
