About 500 police officers participated in a megaoperation in order to combat organized crime in the region of Complexo do Alemão and Penha.
Residents reported an intense exchange of fire at dawn and early Friday morning, as well as reports of burnt barricades and fires in the communities.
The 35 -year -old gardener Carlos André Vasconcelos da Silva went to work when he was shot in the back and died on the spot. A military policeman was also shot and referred to a hospital.
