Video shows Russian reconnaissance vessel being hit by drone

The Russian reconnaissance ship Ivan Khurs was apparently hit by an unmanned surface craft in the Black Sea, new video shows, disputing a claim by Moscow which said on Wednesday it had managed to thwart a Ukrainian attack on the vessel. .

Images shared by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense on social networks on Thursday (25) and analyzed by CNN seemed to show the moments before impact.

Video is filmed from a camera placed on the surface craft. It shows the craft approaching a larger craft at high speed.

The analysis of CNN determined that the vessel is most likely the Ivan Khurs. It also shows the tip of the unmanned surface craft, similar to the unmanned surface craft seen in the video posted by the Russian Ministry of Defense on Thursday.

The power cuts off when the vessel comes within a few meters of the vessel.

“When the Russian reconnaissance ship ‘Ivan Khurs’ encountered a Ukrainian drone,” the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense said in a tweet. “Indeed, a perfect date!”

Background

On Wednesday (24), the Russian defense ministry acknowledged the attack on the Ivan Khurs, but said that all surface craft failed to reach the vessel.

“Today, at 5:30 am, the armed forces of Ukraine made an unsuccessful attempt to attack the Black Sea Fleet ship Ivan Khurs with three unmanned speedboats,” said Russian Defense Ministry Spokesperson Major General Igor Konashenkov. .

“All enemy boats were destroyed by fire from the standard armament of a Russian ship 140 kilometers northeast of the Bosphorus.”

Russia’s Ministry of Defense has also shared footage that appears to show one of the surface craft exploding when hit by gunfire.

“The Black Sea Fleet ship ‘Ivan Khurs’ continues to fulfill its tasks,” added Konashenkov.

It is unclear what happened after the surface ship apparently hit the Ivan Khurs and how the scout ship may have been damaged during the attack.

A CNN reached out to Ukrainian sources for additional details, but has yet to hear back.
