The Philippines has accused China’s coast guard of launching a “brutal attack” with sharp weapons in the South China Sea earlier this week.
Images released by the Philippine Army this Thursday (20) show Chinese coast guard officers pointing an ax and other sharp or pointed tools at the Philippine soldiers and cutting the rubber boat they were in, in what the Philippine government called “a brazen act of aggression.”
See the moment of conflict:
The two countries exchanged accusations over the clash near the Second Thomas Shoal in the disputed Spratly Islands, which took place on Monday (17).
The incident is the latest in a series of increasingly tense clashes in the resource-rich and strategically important waterway.
Furthermore, this is a major escalation in a festering dispute that threatens to drag the United States into another global conflict.
