Operations are underway to rescue Ottavia Piana, a 32-year-old cave explorer, who was trapped in the Bueno Fonteno cave, near Bergamo, according to information from Italian state TV RAI.
Piana fell eight meters, in an unexplored part of the cave, suffering fractures to her legs, chest and face.
Approximately 100 first responders, including medical staff, are involved. Three teams of cave-clearing experts are using small explosive charges to widen the narrowest areas.
A three-kilometer telephone line is allowing communication between Piana and the surface. Despite her injuries, she remains “alert and cooperative”, according to RAI.
See rescue operation:
Since Sunday (15), Piana has been in an improvised heated base inside the cave. This Monday (16), rescue teams began taking her on a stretcher through the narrowest sections of the cave. Progress is slow and laborious due to high humidity and a temperature of 8°C.
This is not Piana’s first accident in the Bueno Fonteno cave. In July 2023, she was trapped for 40 hours.
Authorities estimate that the current operation could take several days, due to the difficulty of the final stretch to exit the cave.
2024 is expected to be the hottest year on record, according to the WMO
