Investigated Content: Video, posted on TikTok, shows confusion among people dressed in red. A man who is in the center of the images screams a lot and curses. Another woman says he would be making money. In the video, two texts were inserted: “Lula’s act in Aracaju” and “confusion to pay the people who went to participate in Lula’s act”.
where it was published: Twitter, TikTok and Facebook.
Completion of Proof: Confusion shown in video did not happen after the act of former president and candidate for the Presidency of the Republic Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in Aracaju, Sergipe, as post on TikTok states. The registration was actually made in November 2013 during the Workers’ Party’s Direct Elections Process (PED), which took place across the country that year. In the process, those affiliated to the legend must choose the president of the acronym at national and state levels.
In the video, it is possible to identify Senator Rogério Carvalho (PT-SE), who is currently running for the state government, but he has dark hair. In 2022, the parliamentarian has gray hair. The PT’s advisor in Sergipe confirmed that he was the politician in the video and stated that it was a 2013 record made in Aracaju.
In the publication, it is also possible to identify the number 180 written on people’s shirts. The number is not used by the PT in federal or state elections. In addition, no candidate for the Senate (position in which the candidate’s number has three numbers) by Sergipe, in 2022, is using the number 180, as per the Disclose Cand.
In searches on Twitter, it was possible to confirm that the number 180 was the one used by Rui Falcão to run for the position of national president of the PT in 2013. In addition, a report by the G1 that year on the party’s internal elections shows people wearing the same T-shirt that appears in the video.
Lula, who is currently campaigning for the Presidency of the Republic, was in Aracaju on June 18 this year. There were no riots at the time.
Falsefor Comprova, is content invented or edited to change its original meaning and deliberately disseminated to spread a falsehood.
Scope of publication: As of October 1st, the video on TikTok had 6,029 likes, 1,359 comments, and 6,021 shares. On Facebook, the publication had 3,800 comments and 197,000 views. On Twitter, only one of the publications totaled 1,055 shares and 2,467 likes.
What the author of the publication says: The video was posted on TikTok. In the profile, there is the identification that the person works in the city hall of Novo São Joaquim (MT). As the social network does not allow sending messages between profiles that do not follow each other, Comprova looked for the name of the profile on Google. The result found a page of an accounting office in Novo São Joaquim, which has a WhatsApp contact number. The team sent a message, but so far there has been no response.
How do we check: To verify, the first step was to look for other places where the video was posted. We found a post on Twitter, from June 2022. In the comments of the post, some people pointed out that the man in the center of the image would be the senator and candidate for the government of Sergipe, Rogério Carvalho, and that the images were old. There was also a comment that said that the situation had happened in the Bank Workers’ Union.
We then sought advice from the PT in Sergipe, the PT Nacional, Rogério Carvalho and the Bank Workers’ Union. The PT in Sergipe explained that the images would be from an internal party election in 2013.
To confirm that the information was really correct, Comprova searched Google and Twitter, using the search tool by date, for information about that year’s internal election. The search found news on State of Mines and not G1. In the report by G1, it is possible to compare the clothes used by people in the video checked.
The team also looked for Disclose Cand, a tool of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), if any candidate for the Senate in Sergipe is using the number 180, which appears on people’s T-shirts in the video, at the polls. We also compared the current images of Senator Rogério Carvalho with those of the video, in which it is possible to see that the congressman is looking more aged now.
Finally, we tried to contact the author of the publication.
Video was recorded in PT’s Direct Elections in 2013
The content was recorded during the PT’s Direct Elections Process, which took place across the country in 2013. It shows Rogério Carvalho – at the time a federal deputy and currently a senator and party candidate for the government of Sergipe – discussing with other activists.
That year, Rui Falcão was elected national president of the party and ran with the number 180, as shown by publications of the time on social networks (1, two and 3). Furthermore, none of the seven candidates to the Senate of Sergipe in 2022 uses the number 180 in these elections.
The number is stamped on t-shirts worn by several people who appear in the video and is visible even with the poor resolution of the material. One reportage aired by the newspaper Bom Dia SE, from TV Sergipe, affiliated with Rede Globo, brings images from that period. In them, it is possible to see people wearing the same clothes:

Another proof that the video is not current is the physical characteristics of Rogério Carvalho. In the verified images, he has dark hair, but he currently has gray hair:

Squid been in Sergipe on June 18 of this year and held an act at the Convention Center, in the Inácio Barbosa neighborhood, in Aracaju. At the time, according to a survey carried out by Comprova, no riots were reported.
The shirt worn by Rogério Carvalho in Lula’s act and in the video is also different. In the verified images, he is wearing a red blouse and no print. On the day that Lula was in the city, the candidate for the government of Sergipe wore clothes stamping the face of the former president:

The PT’s press office in Sergipe confirmed that the video in question is an episode that took place in 2013, during an internal party vote, and highlighted that it is possible to verify the temporality of the material, citing that Rogério Carvalho is visibly younger in the verified images. “Unfortunately, the material, which is absolutely old, has been used in a decontextualized way with the aim of deceiving Sergipe voters,” says the party.

The PT’s Communications secretary in Sergipe, Plínio Pugliesi, explained to Comprova that the images were recorded at the headquarters of the Bank Workers’ Union in Aracaju, when Rogério competed to the party’s state presidency, an election he won. “Because it is an internal electoral process of the party, traditionally marked by fierce disputes, there was this tension between him and some militants, which soon after was overcome internally, but today it is being disseminated in the form of fake news”, he declared.
why do we investigate: Comprova investigates suspicious content that goes viral on social media about the presidential elections, public policies and the pandemic. During the period leading up to the elections in Brazil, many contents are being released with the aim of disrupting the electoral process and voter choice. The video verified here presents false information involving the presidential candidate Lula. The population must choose its candidates based on true and reliable information.
Other checks on the topic: In recent checks on the elections, Comprova showed that there is no evidence that the polls arrived in Cordeiro (RJ) with votes already registered, contrary to what the audio sayswhat supporter who took a photo with Bolsonaro in Garanhuns is not Lula’s uncle, unlike what the post says is that complaints about ballot boxes must be registered with the chairman of the board, not in the TSE application.
This weekend, the Comprova team joined 6 other fact-checking initiatives in Brazil to jointly verify election misinformation. The partnership brings together AFP, Aos Fatos, Boatos.org, Comprova, E-Farsas, Fato ou Fake and Lupa.
