After the heavy rains that hit Porto Alegre, the level of Lake Guaíba dropped, revealing a scene of destruction in the city center. Local traders face severe losses due to water that invaded their stores, damaging products, furniture and structures.
A shopkeeper identified as Daniela described the situation as “devastating”, with mud covering everything. “Everything on the ground, the mannequin floating, was really mud, a scary, sad scene, a sadness”, she reported.
Small businesses hit
“We are small store owners who have worked here for years. I have a family, my daughter depends on it”, said trader Marilaine, adding that the income of her family and her employees depends exclusively on the store.
The damage was extensive, with new floors being lifted by the force of the water and newly purchased merchandise being damaged. The businesswoman revealed that she will lose part of her savings to pay her employees' first salary, and if the situation continues, she could default on them.
Cleaning work is underway on Rua Voluntários da Pátria, an important commercial area in the heart of Porto Alegre. Teams remove damaged furniture, wood and products, while some residents take the opportunity to collect items that can be saved.
