Video: two robotic legs set a record in the 100-meter race. No body at all

Agility Robotics introduced the unusual bipedal robot Cassie back in 2017. He is literally bipedal – apart from the legs and the pelvis, the car has nothing. In 2021, Cassie completed the 5K run in just over 53 minutes, and now holds the Guinness World Record for the 100m bipedal run in 24.73 seconds. It is reported by New Atlas.

To prepare the robot for a high-speed run, engineers had to use two neural networks at once due to the conditions for setting a record. So, the robot needed to start the race in a standing position and finish it standing up too (and not just falling down after the finish). Because of this, the developers had to use a second neural network (in addition to running) to keep the robot standing. As the engineers noted, the transition from one state to another is the most difficult part (similar to the fact that taking off and landing an aircraft is more difficult than controlling it in the air).

Cassie’s record is still far from the maximum human result – in 2009, Usain Bolt ran the 100 meters in 9.58 seconds.
