Due to the strong winds caused by Typhoon Kong-rey, planes had difficulty taking off and landing at Taoyuan International Airport this Thursday (31).

The typhoon hit the country’s east coast this Thursday. It is the biggest storm to hit the island in almost 30 years, shutting down the local stock exchange, canceling hundreds of flights and reducing train services.

The fire department said one person died when their truck crashed into a fallen tree in central Taiwan. The tropical cyclone knocked out power to nearly half a million homes and nearly 10,000 people were evacuated from high-risk areas in advance, the government said.

The storm also hit the mountainous and sparsely populated county of Taitung on the east coast, with strong winds and torrential rain that affected almost the entire island, according to Taiwan’s Central Meteorological Administration.

In addition to the interruption of air service, strong Typhoon Kong-rey caused severe flooding in remote areas of Taiwan, damaging vehicles and homes after hitting the island’s east coast this Thursday.

The typhoon is expected to hit mainland China along the coast of Fujian province this Friday morning (1st). China’s financial hub Shanghai is bracing for one of the worst rains in more than 40 years.
