The suspicion, according to the police, is that they died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon monoxide

Augusto Scalabrini Neto, a professor at the USP medical school and coordinator of the cardiology residency program at the Sírio Libanês hospital, explains that carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin and prevents it from being oxygenated.

“It's as if you were in an environment without oxygen. Your heart stops, you die of asphyxiation. It’s the same situation as cases of people who die with the fireplace on, the mechanism is the same,” she says.

He highlights that exposure to the gas is serious and has a high mortality rate. However, in some cases, poisoning can be treated through effective ventilation and some antidotes.

In relation to the death of young people in Santa Catarina, the doctor assesses that it is possible that there was a combustion leak into the vehicle.

“It is an almost odorless gas […] It starts with nausea, vomiting, dizziness, they become unconscious and die”, he concludes.
