Videos and trending topics should arrive on Bluesky soon, says director

THE The number of Brazilians on the Bluesky social network has grown exponentially since the suspension of X, formerly Twitter, in the country. But new users have missed some functions that are not available on the platform — such as videos, trending topics, pinned posts, etc.

Bluesky’s Chief Operating Officer Rose Wang assured the CNN that the company is listening to Brazilians’ requests, and that videos and trending topics will arrive on the platform soon.

“We have heard repeatedly how important these two features are to Brazilians. So we want to respond in kind, since Brazilians are betting on us, we want to make sure they get these features,” Wang said.

According to her, the permission to post videos on the platform should arrive in the next update of the application, in a few weeks. The trending topics (lists of the most talked about subjects at the moment) should take a little longer, but Wang guarantees that they are on the way.

How Brazilians shaped Bluesky

The increase in Brazilian users on the social network has led Bluesky’s official account to start publishing its posts in Portuguese: “This is now a Brazilian app,” the profile declared last Saturday (31).

Over the past seven days — since X was suspended — 3 million new users have created their accounts on Bluesky and 85% of them are Brazilian, according to Wang, accounting for more than 2.5 million Brazilians on the platform.

For the director, the Brazilian way of life helped shape the face of the social network from the beginning. “Brazilians have a very energetic posting style, which shaped the initial culture of Bluesky. There are a lot of memes, gifs, jokes and casual posts on Bluesky. I would say it is much more fun and relaxed, and people are talking more, they are having a lot of conversations and really making friends,” she said.

Wang explained that although this is the largest wave of Brazilians joining the social network, it is not the first. Since Elon Musk bought Twitter in late 2022, Bluesky has been receiving new users every time a new controversy involving the billionaire’s platform has emerged. One of the first groups to embrace the network were Brazilian fan profiles — mainly those of Taylor Swift.
