Videos: Cars are swept away by floods in China

Images released this Monday (22) show a car being swept away during a river flood, after the Chinese province of Guangdong suffered from several days of rain and strong winds.

Since Thursday (18), this province, located in the south of the country, has been hit by heavy, continuous and widespread rain, with powerful storms that marked the beginning of the region's annual flood season earlier than normal.

Reuters was able to confirm the location of the video taking into account the nearby building, river, vegetation and terrain, which matched satellite and archival images.

A state media video shows a similar scene. Reuters was unable to confirm when exactly the image was filmed.

In addition to this case, another video shows another vehicle being dragged by the force of the water.

April rainfall records were broken in many parts of Guangdong, and northern Guangzhou was partially submerged in floodwaters.

The rains also flooded some cities in the densely populated Pearl River Delta in southern China, raising concerns about the region's preparedness against larger deluges induced by extreme weather events.

These weather events have become more intense and unpredictable in China due to global warming, scientists say, with record-breaking rains and droughts often at the same time.
