On Friday night (4), the sky of Rio Grande do Sul witnessed a “very rare and totally atypical situation”, according to Fabricio Colvero, creator of the Bate-Papo Astronomico project, an observatory located in Santa Maria, in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. state. On that occasion, two bolides were recorded, which can be defined as exceptionally bright meteors. Look:
Fabricio explains that both can be called “Fireball”, which is the name used when meteors have a magnitude (i.e., brightness) greater than the approximate brightness of the planet Venus. “These had a brightness hundreds of times greater than the apparent brightness of Venus”, he states.
The first car was seen at 8:49 pm, followed by another at 9:01 pm. The occurrence of two bolides of great magnitude like these, on the same night, is already considered very rare, but according to Fabricio, the events occurring within a 12-minute interval makes the situation even more unique.
In addition to observatories such as Bate-Papo Astronomico, security cameras in several cities in the state also recorded the phenomena.
Now, experts have begun analyzing the images captured to determine the characteristics of these meteors.
