In an attempt to include the group of 34 Brazilians in the next waves of civilians evacuated from the Gaza Strip, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira called this Thursday (2) afternoon to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, Sameh Shoukry.
In the conversation, according to reports made to CNN Shoukry committed to “making efforts” tomorrow so that Brazilians are included in the next lists.
The expectation at Itamaraty is that this telephone contact between the chancellors is unlikely to have practical effects this Friday (3). There is hope, however, that the Brazilians can be released from Gaza to Egypt in a matter of days — perhaps over the weekend.
In the next few hours, Vieira also intends to speak with Israel’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Eli Cohen.
Brazilian diplomats heard today, at the ministry’s headquarters in Jerusalem, that there is no Israeli interference in the preparation of the lists and no discrimination against citizens of the country.
Earlier, in an interview with CNN , Ambassador Alessandro Candeas, head of Brazil’s representation in Ramallah (West Bank), said that there is a lack of “clear criteria” on the lists of those authorized to leave Gaza through the Rafah crossing. “There is no transparent criteria. It seems relatively random to us,” Candeas said.
