Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira highlighted the impact of the Security Council’s inaction on the war between Israel and the radical Islamic group Hamas. The chancellor participates in the international conference called by Egypt to discuss the conflict in the Middle East.
“The paralysis of the Security Council is having harmful consequences for the lives of millions of people. This is not in the interest of the international community. We also need to seek to avoid any escalation of the conflict. In the near future, we need to find ways to revitalize the peace process, advance political negotiations for a just and lasting peace in the region. Simply managing the conflict is not an acceptable alternative”, stated the ambassador in his speech during the conference.
Vieira recapped Brazil’s work in the Security Council and stated that the votes in favor of 12 countries to the resolution presented by the Brazilian delegation “are evidence of broad political support for action by the Council”.
He also states that Brazil will preside over an open Security Council debate on October 24th and asks that the dialogues continue on that date, calling for participation at the highest level — that is, the participation of heads of state and authorities.
The head of Brazilian diplomacy condemned “the terrorist actions of Hamas in Israel”, highlighted the situation of Brazilians who are waiting for the opportunity to leave the region of conflict and mentioned the three Brazilians murdered in the region.
