The death toll in Vietnam from Typhoon Yagi and the landslides and flooding it caused rose to 226 on Thursday (12), the government’s disaster agency said, as flood pressure eased in the capital Hanoi.
The Southeast Asian country is reeling from the impact of Typhoon Yagi, the strongest storm to hit Asia this year, which made landfall on Vietnam’s northeast coast on Saturday.
More than 100 people remain missing, and about 800 were injured, the agency said in a report.
Several districts of the capital Hanoi remained flooded on Thursday (12), but the meteorological agency said late in the day that flood pressure had eased, while flash floods and landslides continued to affect areas in northern Vietnam.
Earlier, the city had evacuated thousands of people living near the Red River, which burst its banks as its waters reached their highest level in 20 years.
“There’s a lot of sadness in the city and there was a lot of worry going into the evening,” said Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation co-CEO Skye Maconachie. “A lot of people who had almost nothing lost everything.”
The government’s weather forecasting agency said late Thursday (12) that the river had peaked in Hanoi and begun to recede.
North of Hanoi, landslides and severe flooding are still affecting several areas, state media said.
“I never thought my house would be underwater so deeply,” said Hoang Van Ty, standing outside his home in Thai Nguyen province.
“My clothes and furniture were all underwater. A lot of things were floating too, but luckily I closed the doors and nothing was washed away.”
flash flood
In Lao Cai province, authorities were racing Thursday to search for 55 people missing in a flash flood that swept through Nu Village on Tuesday, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
The flash flood killed 46 people and injured 17 others in the village, the agency said, adding that 300 soldiers and 359 local officials were taking part in search and rescue efforts.
