Vila Madalena, in SP, appears in the “Time Out” list of the coolest neighborhoods in the world

Brail has reappeared in the list of the coolest neighborhoods in the world by “Time Out”, a media brand that publishes guides to the most interesting places in the world. This time, who represents Brazilian soil in the select group of 51 “coolest” neighborhoods in 2022 is Vila Madalena, in São Paulo, which appears in 13th place in the ranking.

“The São Paulo neighborhood of Vila Madalena owes its bohemian character to the students of the University of São Paulo, who arrived in the 1980s, seduced by the attraction of cheap rent and cheaper caipirinhas. Today, trendy young types still fill the streets. From the diversity of bars on Rua Aspicuelta, through the late afternoon to sunset and the nightly samba shows that also attract crowds of different generations”, says the publication, which continues.

“Craft cafes and avant-garde galleries round out Vila Madalena’s cultural broth, but the highlight here is Beco do Batman: a community-owned open-air graffiti gallery showcasing the work of São Paulo’s best street artists.”

The publication also indicates what a perfect day would be in the West Zone neighborhood of São Paulo.

“Grab a coffee to go and a cheese bread from the Coffee Lab and head to Batman Alley before the crowds arrive. For food, try Carlos, the best pizza outside Italy, or do as the locals do and watch a live soccer and samba game with fried snacks and a bucket of stupidly cold beer at a traditional pub like Posto 6 or Salve Jorge. ”, says “Time Out”.

To choose the 51 coolest neighborhoods in the world, the publication surveyed 20,000 city residents and local experts to rank the best places for fun, food, culture and community life.

“The neighborhoods we present are, quite simply, amazing places to be right now. These are areas with accessible and cutting-edge culture and nightlife; brilliant, affordable food and drink; Lively street life and great community vibes. These are distinct districts that you can walk through in half an hour or less, but you can spend a full day or more exploring. They are great areas for people to live, visit and stay”, says the text that introduces the places.

First on the list is the Colonia Americana neighborhood in Guadalajara, Mexico. The city is named by “Time Out” as the cultural capital of the country and, currently, the neighborhood at the top of the list is the epicenter of the underground scene.

“Located right next to downtown, 500 years old, it’s a daring mix of art deco and neoclassical mansions and warehouses containing some of the city’s best music venues,” the publication says.

From Latin America, in addition to São Paulo, there are Santiago, in Chile, with the 9th coolest neighborhood in the world – the colorful neighborhood of Yungaye – and Buenos Aires, in 34th place with Chacarita.

There are also neighborhoods distributed around the world on the list, such as Lisbon, Portugal, with Cais do Sodré in second place in the United States, Canada, Japan, Thailand and Cambodia.

Last year, Brazil was left out of the list, which had at the top the neighborhood of Nørrebro, in Copenhagen, Denmark.
