Village where Yanomami girl died was burned and abandoned by residents, says council

The president of the District Council for Yanomami and Ye’kuana Indigenous Health (Condisi-YY), Júnior Hekurari Yanomami, said this Friday (29) that the Indians who lived in the community where the death of a 12-year-old Yanomami girl occurred burned the village and left the area.

An operation by the Federal Police, the Federal Public Ministry (MPF), the National Indian Foundation (FUNAI) and the Special Secretariat for Health and Indigenous Peoples (SESAI) are in the region where the village is located to investigate the death of the girl, reported on Monday. Friday (25) by Condisi-YY.

According to the complaint, the girl was attracted by miners who work in the area and raped, which would have caused her death. Another 3-year-old is missing. According to the complaint from the village members, the child had been thrown into the river.

“No evidence was found of the practice of crimes of murder and rape or death by drowning, as narrated in the complaint. The teams, therefore, are still in due diligence in search of clarification,” the task force statement said.

In video sent to CNNthe president of the council reports that the community in Aracaçá, in Roraima, was burned and abandoned by most of its residents.

As part of the Yanomami traditions, the body of the girl who was killed in the village was also burned. “Some Indigenous leaders gathered and analyzed the images of the burned community and reported that, according to custom and traditions, after the death of a loved one, the community in which he lived is burned and everyone goes to another place,” the council said.

“Finally, we clarify that we will continue to investigate and demand that the competent bodies act for the immediate removal of criminals who are in the Yanomami Indigenous Territory”, concludes the statement from Condisi-YY.

The indigenous organization denounces that miners are coercing and guiding the indigenous people not to talk about what is happening within the community. Some indigenous people reported to Condisi-YY that they had received 5 grams of gold from the miners, not to mention the case.

“They also reported that other crimes had already taken place in the region, and that a newborn was recently taken to the capital of Boa Vista by a prospector who claimed to be the child’s father,” said a statement from Condisi.
