With a focus on Carnival, between the 5th and 18th of February, 271 perpetrators of violence against women were arrested by the Civil Police in Rio de Janeiro. The captures were related to domestic, family and gender-based violence. Of the total, 66% of suspects had already committed similar crimes in previous situations.
The arrests took place during an action coordinated by the General Department of Police for Women's Assistance (DGPAM) and which involved all units in the state. The mobilization of teams to join the operation meant that the number of captures was greater this year than those recorded in the same period in 2022 and 2023.
The focus on Carnival is because, according to the police, this type of crime increases at this time of year. The objective is to prevent more women from suffering from violence and ending up losing their lives.
In 2023, the state of Rio recorded 99 femicides, 45% more than in 2017, the first full year in which this type of crime began to be counted by the Public Security Institute.
