Violent deaths of children fell by 40%, says Damares Alves at the UN

The Minister of Women, Family and Human Rights, Damares Alves, highlighted this Monday (28), during the 49th annual session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UN), in Geneva, the reduction in violent deaths of children and adolescents in Brazil.

According to the latest Data SUS report, the reduction was, on average, 40% in the 2019-2021 biennium, compared to the previous biennium.

Another index highlighted by the minister was an 18% drop in teenage pregnancy records. She highlighted investments of R$ 600 million in the fight in the National Plan to Combat Femicide.

At one point in the speech, which lasted about seven minutes, Damares Alves stated that “the Bolsonaro government has always promoted and defended peace”. The minister did not cite any specific conflict.

The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has been at the center of demonstrations during the Human Rights Council session, amid concerns over civilian victims and those displaced by the conflict. Follow the special coverage of CNN.

Damares also presented a position against abortion. “We defend freedom and life, from conception, as the most fundamental human rights”, said the minister.
