Violent incidents broke out in Brussels after Morocco beat Belgium 2-0 at the World Cup in Qatar. As reported by the website of the Belgian radio and television rtbf, tempers flared when the Moroccans’ first goal was disallowed, while there was an escalation of tension in the second half.

Footage posted on social media and reproduced by Belgian media shows burning bins and an empty vehicle overturned in the middle of the road. The police tried to disperse the crowd by pouring water under pressure, while they prohibited traffic on several streets.

Police said rioters armed with sticks set public roads on fire, destroying traffic lights.

“A journalist was injured in the face by flares”, according to the police who then decided to intervene with vehicles with water cannons and the use of tear gas.
