Virginia Fonseca faces adult women’s acne; understand the condition

Recently, influencer Virginia Fonseca has appeared with a ‘clean face’ on social media and shared her recent treatment against pimples. Last Thursday (9), she showed off the powder from a laser treatment, which leaves her face redder than normal. The procedure impressed her followers, who further highlighted the businesswoman’s current acne problem.

Virginia Fonseca faces the condition of adult women’s acne. According to Victor Bechara, member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, although it is not so common in older people, this condition can appear in women over 25 years of age, due to genetic and hormonal issues.

“Virginia’s condition, called adult female acne, is multifactorial and some factors may be hormonal, due to genetics, diet (rich in sugar, processed foods, animal milk), cigarettes, stress, medications (various medications such as lithium, vitamin B, among others) and diseases such as polycystic ovarian syndrome”, highlights the dermatologist.

Acne in adulthood should not be treated like a big deal, but some factors can help to avoid it, as the specialist highlights:

  • Too much water intake
  • Adequate and anti-inflammatory diet; prefer natural foods rich in beta-carotene, vitamin E, polyphenols and omega-3. Avoid inflammatory foods with a high glycemic index (sugar, carbohydrates, sweets and processed foods) and foods with a high casein index, such as animal milk
  • Avoid cigarettes
  • Avoid hormone replacement without medical advice and guidance
  • Perform physical activity and weight control
  • Skin care routine to control inflammation, oiliness, and keep the skin always hydrated
  • Avoid indiscriminate use of B vitamins and other medications
  • Hormonal and gynecological evaluation

“Treatment must start from the inside out with all the life changes mentioned above. For the most part, we started treatments with topical medications (retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin, clascoterone, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, prebiotics, among others) and also oral treatments with isotretinoin, spironolactone, combined contraceptives and probiotics”, concludes Victor.
