A gaffe born from a slip: the mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi, during the presentation event of the DS Automobile 78th Italian Open of golf, the international tournament to be held in Rome at the end of the summer, between 2 and 5 September 2021, declared that from the “green”, as the golf course is called, you can admire, “looking closely”, the “dome of the Colosseum”.
Obviously the Roman amphitheater does not have a dome, and Virginia Raggi also knows it well: it is likely that the mayor was confused with “er cupolone”, the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, which – together with the Colosseum – is one of the symbols of the capital of Italy.
This was specified later in the presentation of the event by Lavinia Biagiotti Cigna, president of the Golf & Country Club which will host the event: the location «from many views offers the exciting view of the dome of St. Peter».
