Virtual escape to the National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan

In the confusion of these hectic times, who wouldn’t want to dive into a painting from 1350 and take a walk in the Peach Garden? Unfortunately time machines, magic wands and portkeys are not yet part of our reality, so for this purpose it is good to rely on virtual reality!

In the weekends July 1-2 and July 8-9The National Museum of Science and Technology of Milan is transformed into a portal to allow the most curious to enjoy the Peach Garden-The Hidden Seasonsa virtual reality experience conceived by the Korean artist Hayoun Kwon, whose works are often included in the itineraries of the Center Pompidou, the MoMA or the Palais de Tokyo. You are basically (perhaps not the most correct adverb) walking through a 14th century Korean painting!

Unlike the (already seen) virtual reality, in Peach Garden there is the possibility to explore a world of 100 square meters without the need for a controllers. It is a real invitation to lose touch with reality and immerse yourself in a walk in one of five surreal gardens that transform with the changing of the seasons. The landscapes are inspired by the painting Dream journey to peach blossom land of An Gyeon who lived between 1350 and 1447.

The contemporary artist has been able to weave the pictorial tradition of the Chosun dynasty with the most modern VR technology, creating an experience that is at the same time a dialogue with art, technology and the other visitors present in the space. You can freely walk through the forest or along the coast company of five other people, without the risk of colliding because they will be perceived as luminous emanations. Warning, this is not a game.

It’s a completely new approach, far from virtual reality experiences which tend to be increasingly narrative and interactive. Peach Garden it is the result of the Museum’s mission to use digital languages and technologies to enhance its heritage. A museum which not only had its first website in 1997, but which is also the only one in Italy to have a game specialist on their staff. Luca RoncelloGame Designer and Head of Gaming & Digital Interactivity of the Museum explains that «Peach Garden brings into play the potential of virtual reality as the engine of a strongly emotional and imaginative aesthetic experience».
