Virtual world amplifies real-world oppression, says anthropologist David Nemer

O CNN Our World this Saturday (26) interviewed David Nemer, anthropologist and professor in the Department of Media Studies at the University of Virginia, in the United States. He spoke about how social media influences and reflects the war in Ukraine.

Nemer explains that one aspect of the conflict takes place online: “Cyber warfare has also been planned.” The dispute between narratives since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine has a direct impact on the course of the conflict and the measures adopted by other countries.

“Putin’s biggest fear is that the pro-Western narrative will spread across Russia,” he says.

According to Nemer, to understand technology, from an anthropological point of view, is to understand that social networks are also social actors. “The virtual world amplifies the oppressions of the real world,” he says.

The anthropologist also explains that the virtual environment was not designed to promote a healthy debate, as content with negative content is the type of content that most engages.
