Recent visits by US officials have strengthened Taiwan’s resolve to defend itself, the country’s President Tsai Ing-wen said today as she met visiting US Senator Marsha Blackburn in Taipei, defying Beijing’s warnings.
China claims Taiwan as its own territory, despite strong opposition from the island’s democratically elected government. The Chinese armed forces held large-scale military exercises near Taiwan following a visit to Taipei in early August by Democrat Nancy Pelosi, who is the speaker of the US House of Representatives.
A week later, five members of Congress visited Taiwan and late last night, Senator Blackburn landed in Taipei.
During the meeting held at the presidential office, President Tsai commented positively on the visits.
