Visits to Penitentiary I in Franco da Rocha, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, were suspended this Sunday (21) after a rebellion took place there on the morning of this Saturday (20).
According to the Penitentiary Administration Secretariat (SAP), the motive for the riot will be investigated. In addition, a disciplinary investigation has been opened and all those responsible will be held criminally liable, SAP reported.
According to the São Paulo State Prison System Employees Union (SIFUSPESP), this was the first rebellion after four years in the São Paulo prison system.
The protest took place when prisoners gathered in the central courtyard and set fire to mattresses, said the Fire Department of Cajamar, a neighboring municipality.
According to reports from witnesses to the Military Police, around 60 family members of prisoners and employees were inside the prison at the time of the riot.
According to SAP, there were no hostages and no officers were injured. Three inmates were injured and taken to hospital for treatment. Four other inmates were treated in the unit’s infirmary for smoke inhalation.
Prison population
Penitentiary I in Franco da Rocha has the capacity to receive 914 people and currently has 1,398 inmates in the prison unit.
According to data updated by the Penitentiary Administration Secretariat (SAP), this Friday (19), the location has a prison population 52.95% higher than its capacity.
