Roman Storm expressed his gratitude to Buterin for the donation, writing in X that the Ethereum co-founder’s “unwavering support and leadership in the industry” support and inspire all crypto enthusiasts. Storm clarified that Buterin’s donation represents about 25% of the $650,000 available in the JusticeDAO fund.
This is not the first time Buterin has directed funds to support people or organizations going through legal proceedings. In 2022, he transferred 10 ETH, worth about $30,980 at that time, to the AssangeDAO legal fund. The fund was created to support WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. In October, Buterin donated 100 ETH for $240,000 to the Free Pertsev and Storm Juicebox foundations. This was in addition to the 30 ether contribution made in May.
In August 2022, the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned cryptomixer Tornado Cash, saying North Korean hackers had used the service to launder more than $7 billion in cryptocurrency since 2019.
In 2022, Dutch authorities arrested Tornado Cash developer Alexey Pertsev. In May 2024, the Russian was found guilty of money laundering and received a prison sentence of more than five years. Pertsev’s defense filed an appeal against the court’s decision, and Storm was released on bail. The trial in the case was supposed to take place in December 2024, but was postponed to April 14, 2025.
