Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin published a blog article in which he describes the key goals for the development of Ethereum, including increasing the throughput of the main network and second-layer networks to 100,000 transactions per second.

Buterin emphasized that it is necessary to increase not only the speed of transaction processing, but also the ability to interact between second-level (L2) networks based on Ethereum:

“Ethereum should feel like one ecosystem, not 34 separate blockchains.”

Buterin noted the success of the March Dencun update, which significantly reduced transaction fees in second-tier networks. However, he added that the L2 ecosystem still needs to solve several problems: improve data compression, ensure data availability, make L2 networks sufficiently trustless and improve the user level.

He called ensuring “no trust requirements” one of the main requirements for L2 networks so that they can “inherit the core properties of Ethereum” and provide more reliable scaling in the future.

Buterin also noted the need to scale the Ethereum main network, since its throughput leaves much to be desired. One of the simplest solutions, according to the developer, would be to increase the maximum volume of gas in the block, however, this would increase other risks, including centralization.

“One of the most important tasks remains the completion of the development plan based on rollups and the solution of these problems, while it is necessary to maintain the reliability and security of the Ethereum blockchain,” concluded Buterin.

Recently, Vitalik Buterin named more distant goals for Ethereum developers.
