Vitalik Buterin called Mark Karpeles a symbol of the “dark side of the crypto industry.” The businessman is known for buying the notorious MtGox exchange in 2011, which went bankrupt three years later. In 2015, Karpeles was arrested by Japanese law enforcement.
However, the co-creator of Ethereum considers the disgraced businessman to be the only “crypto-villain of a bygone era” who has redeemed himself because he is the only one who does not seek public attention, but simply quietly does interesting things.
Buterin also mentioned Kyle Davies, co-founder of cryptocurrency hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (TAC), which collapsed in 2022 due to lack of liquidity. Davis continues to post memes about cryptocurrency deals, ruining the lives of Three Arrows Capital investors who lost billions of dollars, Buterin complains. Davis recently admitted that he has no remorse over TAS's bankruptcy.
The only “crypto villain from a previous era” who deserves a path to redemption is Mark Karpeles @MagicalTux – precisely because he's the only one who's not clamoring for attention asking for one. He's just quietly doing interesting stuff.

Vitalik Buterin's statements came after the court announced the verdict in the case of the former CEO of the bankrupt crypto exchange FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Recently, the co-founder of Ethereum proposed a solution called “Rainbow Staking”, where all categories of service providers are involved, with different levels of responsibility and income.
