During an interview with Tencent News “Qianwang”, Vitalik Buterin expressed dissatisfaction with OpenAI abandoning its original open source concept, ironically calling the company “CloseAI”. According to Buterin, OpenAI made a mistake when it tried to find a compromise between openness and security, and then began to give priority not to security, but to making a profit.
Reflecting on OpenAI’s business development, Buterin recalled how CEO Sam Altman gained control of the company after a power struggle with the board of directors. Due to OpenAI’s transition from a non-profit to a for-profit organization, the board of directors began to serve only an advisory role. Therefore, Buterin recalled the words of the founding father of the United States, Benjamin Franklin: “You cannot sacrifice freedom for security. If you do this, you will lose both security and freedom.”
Buterin believes it would be useful to combine blockchain with decentralized AI or start developing alternative technologies that can compete with artificial intelligence. At the same time, Buterin noted that due to the current hype around AI, a “brain drain” from the crypto industry may begin. This will lead to stagnation in the industry as “ordinary minds” will not be able to develop breakthrough financial applications. This trend will lead to stagnation in the crypto industry, where only similar projects will appear, limited to the launch of coins and exchanges.
Recently, Buterin outlined an ambitious goal for Ethereum: the network throughput should reach 100,000 transactions per second, and the blockchain should interact harmoniously with second-layer networks.
