Vitalik Buterin proposed an Ethereum development plan

Ethereum co -founder Vitalik Buterin published a proposal to update the development plan of Ethereum, which should facilitate the launch of local full nodes, without sacrificing the scaleness of the network.

The initiative received the support of several leading ecosystem experts, including Mika Zolt, Tony Voktetter, Justin Traglia, etc.

The main goal of the proposed changes is to reduce barriers to users who want to have their own RPC server for private and decentralized access to the Ethereum network.

“The value of its own node is not only in the verification of the network, but also in the possibility of local, trusted and private access to blockchain data,” Butaterin noted in his blog.

Although the Ethereum virtual machine (EVM) with zero knowledge and privacy technologies, such as PIR (Private Information Retrieval), allow users to trust external services, they have restrictions:

  • high cost of cryptographic solutions;
  • metadata leaks-IP addresses and requests time can give out the user;
  • Censorship-large RPC providers can block countries or individual users.

Buterin recently put forward a proposal to replace the EVM with RISC-V architecture, in particular in the long run, he sees the effectiveness of the blocks of the blocks precisely with the evidence of the correctness of ZK-EVM with a narrow place.

“The market in which several RPC providers dominate is easily subjected to censorship. Some are already blocking entire countries, ”warns Butaterin.

Therefore, he offers in the short term:

  • The full implementation of the EIP-4444-nodes will store history only in the last almost 36 days, which will significantly reduce the volume of disk space;
  • Distributed storage of history – nodes will store fragments of old data using the erasing code for stability;
  • Changing the structure of gas value – to make data storage is more expensive, and execution is cheaper to stimulate economy in the use of the condition.

The medium-term goal is static verification: reducing the need to preserve Merkle branches with a full RPC functional.

In addition, Buterin proposed to introduce a new type of nodes that:

  • verify the blocks without maintaining a full state;
  • retain only part of the state determined by the user;
  • Process local RPC questions within this part;
  • Do not preserve the branches of the tree of the measure – only “raw” meanings.

Thus, users will be able to choose a configuration, for example, all accounts that are controlled by a private key (EOA) and popular tokens (ERC-20, ERC-721), addresses that have been used for the past two years, as well as applications for exchange, Defi and privacy.

“Such a node provides local access to an important state with a maximum level of privacy,” says Buterin.

He noted that this approach will maintain decentralization, privacy and openness of the Ethereum network in the future, even if gas restrictions are significantly increased (10-100 times).
