Vitalik Buterin shared a new article on Ethereum

Vitalik Buterin shared the sixth article in the series “Possible future of the Ethereum protocol.” The new work is called “Wastefulness” / “The Splurge”.

Buterin’s new article is dedicated to increasing the stability of Ethereum, as well as improving accessibility for users. In addition, in it the programmer also described potential technological challenges, including quantum computing.

Preparing Ethereum for the Quantum Computing Era

According to Buterin, The Splurge upgrade supports his vision of Ethereum as a fast, secure and easy-to-use blockchain. A significant part of the article is devoted to preparing the network for the advent of quantum computers. This technology could theoretically break current encryption standards.

“There are many “little things” in the design of the Ethereum protocol that are very important to the success of Ethereum, but do not fit into any larger subcategory […] This is exactly what The Splurge is designed for,” Vitalik noted.

There are no quantum computers that can crack codes yet. But everything is just ahead. According to Buterin, it is better to prepare for this in advance.

Investments in advanced cryptography will make Ethereum resistant to possible attacks using quantum technologies.

The Splurge brings Ethereum closer to another of Buterin’s goals – making the blockchain more user-friendly. One of the key updates includes account abstraction technology, which allows you to pay transaction fees not only in ETH. This flexibility will greatly simplify interactions with decentralized applications (dApps).

Another element of The Splurge is an update to the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) system, which manages smart contracts on the blockchain. The upgrade will introduce a new format called “EVM Object Format” (EOF). It will simplify the code structure in the EVM, making it easier to manage and scale operations for Layer 2 (L2) solutions.

EOF is expected to arrive as part of the Pectra update, which is scheduled for late this year or early next year.

In previous articles in the series about the future of Ethereum, Vitalik proposed speeding up transactions to 100,000 TPS and ensuring maximum interoperability between L2. In addition, Buterin also figured out how to strengthen the decentralization of ETH staking.
