Co-founder of the Ethereum project Vitalik Buterin discussed Binius is a new cryptographic proof system. In his blog, he examined in detail its features, advantages and key tasks.
In particular, Buterin sees Binius as an effective way to speed up zero-knowledge proof (ZKP). According to him, it provides significant performance gains over zk-SNARK and other cryptographic proofs.
Note that this concept was originally was proposed by cryptographers Benjamin E. Diamond and Jim Posen in 2023.
Buterin's paper talks about how Binius performs calculations on individual binary bits – zeros and ones – instead of large numbers. The underlying data being processed consists of small values. By working directly with bits, Binius can process this data more efficiently, the expert explained.

According to the Ethereum co-founder, the new verification system offers a number of improvements, such as representing data as a multi-dimensional “hypercube” of bits and using binary fields to enable efficient arithmetic operations.
Additionally, Binius uses a specialized encoding and decoding process that converts bit-level data into a form suitable for “polynomial” processing and Merkle proofs.
In conclusion, the expert noted that Binius helps to achieve significant productivity improvements compared to traditional proof systems. In his opinion, this primarily concerns calculations involving small values and bit-level operations.
