Ethereum co -founder Vitalik Buterin and developer Tony Warstetter proposed to introduce a restriction on gas for one transaction at the level of 16.77 million.
They published an improvement in EIP -7983 is designed to increase Ethereum safety and resistance to DOS attacks. Also, such a mechanism will simplify the calculation of the cost of onchain operations.
If the transaction gas limit exceeds 16.77 million, then it will not get into the block and will be rejected at the formation stage.
The current gas restriction is established for the whole block and is at the level of 36 million.
If the EIP-7983 will be accepted, then the proposed limit of 16.77 million will act regardless of the gas limit on the block set by miners or validators.
The decision is also designed to improve work with virtual machines that are based on evidence with zero disclosure (ZKVM), and motivate to break large transactions into smaller ones.
Buterin and Warstetter emphasized that the change has no reverse compatibility with previous versions. However, it will affect only a small part of users and decentralized applications, since most current transactions do not exceed the specified limit.
In May, Ethereum Foundation has launched the Trillion Dollar Securit initiative as a “general project attempt to increase Ethereum safety”.
In July, the project team published the first report in which she indicated six main challenges for the network.
