Today, June 21, representatives of the social network VKontakte officially announced a major update to their video platform VK Video, which received many useful features that have long existed on YouTube. For example, now the function of cross-platform video viewing is available to fans of this service. This means that a user can start watching a certain video on their smartphone, for example, and then continue watching content from the same place already on a laptop or PC. In addition, the platform now boasts the all-important browsing history feature.
The developers said that now the My Videos section will have a complete history of the content viewed — it is implemented both in the web version of the video service and on mobile applications for Android and iOS operating systems (in the foreseeable future, the innovation will also appear on Smart TV devices). The authors of the platform believe that the story will add many new content consumption scenarios when the user watches the video or watches it on another device. And, best of all, live broadcasts will also be saved in the user’s history – this is an important bonus, since now it will be possible to watch the stream or study those episodes that were missed live.

There are also important updates for content authors – now, when uploading a video to the platform, the video creator can divide the video into segments, mark interesting moments on the timeline in the editor, and add a short description to each episode using timecodes. As a result, the user, when hovering over a specific segment of the video, will see a preview of this episode and its brief description. VKontakte believes that time codes will simplify the user’s interaction with the video, as it will become much easier to look for an interesting moment on hours-long videos. At the same time, content authors will now pay more attention to the description of the episodes, since here you can enter keywords that affect the issuance of the video in the search.
And users can now share a link not to the entire video, but to a specific time code – this should simplify the process of distributing content, plus the video platform algorithms will better understand which episode users watch most often and which they don’t watch at all. And although all these functions have long been implemented by the main competitor, it’s nice that VK Video is also growing and developing.
