Today, May 30, the developers of the VK Video platform officially announced the introduction of the latest data transfer technology, which is based on the advanced Internet protocol HTTP / 3, thanks to which the service has accelerated the delivery of video content to the user. Now the video on the platform will start much faster, while the quality of content playback will only increase – Alexander Tobol, VKontakte and VK Video STO, announced this at the CodeFest 12 event. He also said that this improvement will be most noticeable for users with unstable internet.
For example, when using the mobile Internet, the video launch time will be reduced by about 20-25%, while the protocol will work both for standard horizontal videos and for short vertical videos in VK Clips. The platform developers also noted that the new protocol will bring the most noticeable acceleration to users on the road or in places remote from large cities. The fact is that for 10% of the platform’s audience, which is about 10 million people a month, videos will now run a quarter faster. But for users with a weak Internet and an unstable Internet connection (we are talking about tens of thousands of people), the acceleration will be much greater – about one and a half times.
The company’s specialists believe that the latest approach to data transmission has the necessary reliability, which does not harm the speed in any way and is much better suited for the modern format of content consumption. Judging by the results of the tests, the fast start of the video has a positive effect on the overall level of content viewing – as a result, users with weak Internet watch about 10% more videos per session. Moreover, the content of the new protocol is transmitted in encrypted form, so that the overall level of user security is also increased.
At the same time, it is worth recalling that the HTTP / 3 Internet protocol is currently not a generally accepted industry standard – it is used by only a small number of companies around the world. Accordingly, VKontakte employees developed their own version of the implementation of the advanced protocol for both the server side and the player at the application level. The company even gave other developers of various services access to this technology in their own products.
