Vladimir Putin honored the tradition and dived into the icy waters for the Epiphanies

THE Vladimir Putin took a dip in the icy waters to commemorate the Orthodox feast of the Epiphany in the early hours of January 19, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, without specifying in which region the Russian president was.

In Moscow the temperature is -14 degrees Celsius, but that didn't stop Putin from diving three times making his cross into the icy waters of the pool which was shaped like a cross.

Epiphany is one of the most popular holidays in Russia, after Christmas and Easter and according to Russian tradition, men and women dive into the waters three times to symbolize the Holy Trinity. Russia follows the Old Calendar, which is why this year it celebrated Epiphany on January 19.

The Kremlin first publicized Putin's Epiphany feats in 2018. According to Peskov, in the past, the Russian president followed the tradition but did not publicize it. Last year, the head of state took his icy plunge in a suburb of Moscow.
