One of the largest mobile operators Vodafone has chosen Ericsson’s 5G Core dual-mode cloud technology for its 5G core networks in Germany and the UK. Ericsson said it is “a significant step towards realizing the full potential of 5G services and future innovation for Vodafone consumers and corporate customers in both countries.”
The rollout of 5G Core marks a milestone in the delivery of offline 5G connectivity services. Recall that non-autonomous 5G networks rely on the existing architecture inherited from 4G networks, which allows accelerating the introduction of a new generation, but does not allow its potential to be unlocked. Autonomous 5G networks involve the deployment of entirely new core and radio frequency networks. This will provide increased speed, reduced latency, increased coverage, and more connections.
A standalone 5G network will be able to meet the demands of applications that require maximum speed and minimum latency, as well as the ability to split the network. Among them – applications of virtual and augmented reality, edge computing, automation, providing the fourth industrial revolution.
In the UK, the rollout will take five years and will place Ericsson as a key partner for Vodafone’s end-to-end 5G network. In Germany, rollouts have already begun, including the launch of Europe’s largest commercial autonomous 5G network in April.
