A volcano about 40 kilometers (30 miles) from Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, has erupted on Friday, the Icelandic Meteorological Agency said, with a reddish ash cloud illuminating the sky and all incoming and outgoing flights.

Krishovik volcanic system is located south of Mount Fagrandalsfial, on the Reykjav .n Peninsula, in southwestern Iceland.
“The first notice was received by the meteorological service at 23:40 (Greek time). The volcanic eruption was confirmed by webcams and satellite imagery“, Explained the Icelandic meteorological service in a post on its website.
A helicopter with scientific personnel was sent to estimate the magnitude of the explosion, according to the same source.

Keflavik International Airport and the small fishing port of Grindavik are only a few kilometers from the volcano.However, in general, the area where the volcanic eruption is taking place is uninhabited and no danger to the citizens is expected.
