Its prime minister Spain Pedro Sanchez is making an emergency trip to the island of La Palma, in the Canary Islands, where he exploded earlier in the afternoon in volcano Kumbre Vieha, announced his office.
“Given the situation on La Palma Island, the Prime Minister has postponed his trip to New York,” which was scheduled for today, on the occasion of the UN General Assembly. “He will travel to the Canary Islands this afternoon to monitor the situation,” the Spanish government’s press office said.
Stavros Meletlidis, a doctor of volcanology at the National Spanish Geographical Institute, said the eruption had created five cracks in the slope and that he could not say for sure how long the eruption would last. “We have to measure the lava every day and that will help us calculate it,” he explained.

The president of the Canary Islands, Angel Victor Torres, told public television station TVE that no injuries had been reported so far. He stressed that they were “lucky” that the explosion occurred in a sparsely populated area of the island, where more than 80,000 people live.
So far, flights to and from the Canaries are operating normally.
