Volkswagen has found an opportunity to halve the cost of batteries for electric cars

The Volkswagen Group has found an opportunity to halve the cost of producing batteries for its electric vehicles. To achieve this goal, the automaker plans to use single-cell batteries, which are still in development. The company representatives spoke about this during the Power Day presentation.

Thomas Schmall, a member of the board of directors of the Volkswagen Group, said that the company seeks not only to reduce the cost of batteries for electric cars, but also to increase their productivity. It is planned that by 2030 the new development will be used in 80% of all Volkswagen electric vehicles. The head of the company also noted that innovative batteries will be created in-house and will go into production as early as 2023. The company is confident that improved technology will help make electric vehicles an affordable and dominant drive technology.

It’s worth noting that the race to improve battery technology is one of the most expensive on the planet. Almost every automaker is betting on the future of electric vehicles. And in order to gain a significant place in the international market, companies strive to make batteries more powerful, more durable and cheaper.

However, Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess is not afraid of competition. He stated that their transformation will be rapid, massive and unprecedented. The company will show technical progress that the automotive industry has never seen before.

In addition to innovative developments, Volkswagen plans to expand charging points in the US and China. Subsidiary Electrify America will open approximately 3,500 fast charging points in North America by the end of 2021. And by the end of 2025, the automaker will have built 17,000 charging points in China. By comparison, Tesla has 20,000 charging points worldwide.

During the presentation, representatives of the company also announced that from 2022, Volkswagen electric vehicles will support technologies that allow them to connect to private, commercial and public energy systems. The CEO said that electric cars will become mobile power banks.
